Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is About to Break

Torsion springs are wear parts with a rated cycle life. Long before one snaps, the door usually tells you the counterbalance is fading. If you know what to look for, you get to schedule the repair instead of discovering it on a workday morning.
The door feels heavier by hand
This is the clearest test and it takes thirty seconds. With the door closed, pull the opener's release cord to disconnect the trolley, then lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go. A properly balanced door holds roughly where you leave it. A door that sinks or slams down has lost spring tension.
Reconnect the opener afterward by running it through one full cycle.
The opener works harder than it used to
If the motor sounds strained on the way up, hesitates at the start, or the door moves more slowly than you remember, the opener is picking up load the springs should be carrying. Openers are guides, not lifts, and this is the phase where an ignored spring problem turns into an opener replacement.
Visible signs on the spring itself
Look at the spring above the door with a flashlight.
- Rust or pitting along the coil — corrosion shortens spring life significantly
- Stretched or uneven coil spacing compared to the other spring
- Any visible gap in the coil — that spring is already broken
- Loose or shifted winding cones
New noises and uneven movement
A popping or grinding sound as the door starts moving can be a spring binding on a dry shaft or a bearing that has failed. If one side of the door leads the other on the way up, cable tension or spring balance is off.
What to do when you see these signs
Get the door inspected before it fails. Replacing a spring on your schedule is the same repair as replacing it after it breaks — except the door isn't stuck and the cables usually haven't unspooled.
