Making Garage Doors Safer for Veterans and Seniors in Our Community
The Safe Garage Initiative provides no-cost garage-door safety inspections and qualifying repairs for income-eligible veterans and homeowners age 65+ throughout the Charlotte area.
Why This Matters
Garage doors are the largest and heaviest moving systems in many homes. When a door stops working safely, it can affect daily access, security, and independence.
Who Qualifies
Garage Justice uses household income guidelines based on local housing-assistance standards and verifies eligibility privately. Priority is given to significant financial hardship, fixed-income households, and urgent safety concerns.
- Be a veteran or a homeowner age 65 or older
- Live within the Charlotte-area service region
- Own and occupy the home, or be responsible for the garage door
- Meet household-income eligibility guidelines
- Have a legitimate safety, accessibility, or functional garage-door issue
Repairs That May Be Covered
Covered work focuses on safety, access, and reliable function. Full garage-door replacements and major equipment replacements may be evaluated individually based on available resources and community partnerships.

- Damaged or loose cables
- Worn rollers, hinges, and bearings
- Safety sensor problems
- Balance and adjustment issues
- Track problems
- Weather seal concerns

How It Works

Apply or Receive a Referral
A homeowner, family member, nonprofit, veteran organization, senior organization, church, or community partner submits the request.

Eligibility Review
Garage Justice reviews location, age or veteran status, household-income guidelines, repair need, and monthly program capacity privately.

Safety Inspection
A Garage Justice technician evaluates the door, tests safety systems, and determines the repairs needed.

Repair Completed at No Cost
Qualifying repairs are completed at no cost. Applicants are never required to leave a review, referral, testimonial, or social-media post.
Program Commitment
Up to Two Community Repair Projects Each Month
The goal is to complete up to 2 Safe Garage projects every month, regularly as scheduling and resources allow. Program impact will be updated as projects are completed.

Does being 65+ or a veteran automatically guarantee approval?
No. Eligibility also considers household income, repair need, service location, and available monthly program capacity.
